Tasting Notes
Nick Stock says:
This amalgam of old-vine shiraz is a bottle of liquid Hunter Valley red treasure, with a deep robe of ripe cassis, plum and raspberry fruits, some cherries - very pure and complex - some dark spices, and some sweet earthy notes too. The palate's built on lithe, noble tannins that don't betray the elegance for a second. Well-balanced and even.
Tyson Stelzer says:
I have only been alive for a small chapter of Vat 9s illustrious history (spanning fifty years this year), but I have not tasted a young vintage as flattering as 2009. From the oldest and finest blocks of the Ashman’s vineyard, matured in large French oak casks (building texture rather than overt structure or oak flavour), this is a flatteringly soft, textural and approachable style in the true spirit of Hunter shiraz. There are nuances of pepper to its vibrant blackberry, plum and black cherry fruit, with the classic, taut acidity that defines 2009. A wine of brilliant persistence and understated concentration that is approachable now and will live twenty years.
Jeremy Oliver says:
Graceful and finely balanced, this supply, shy and youthful shiraz is likely to build rather considerably with time. It's heady and floral, with almost a pinot-like scent of cherries, plums and chocolates backed by cedary oak and lifted by an exotically spiced but delicate floral perfume. Long and silky, it's deeply flavoured with redcurrants, plums and cassis tightly knit with chocolate/walnut oak and punctuated by a bright acidity.
